-violence is caused by fear

-People are basically good, if they gain knowledge and reason


- convinced religion is main source of ignorance and fear

Post Modern View:

-agree w/ enlightment


-not its own philosophy, just disagree with other world views


- there is no objective truth

Totalitarianism:

-1 absolute leader


- modern form of dictatorship


- propaganda


- required modern tech to control every aspect of of citizens lives


- ex. surveillance cameras



Communism:

- also known as marxism


- extreme left wing


-people are good and can be trusted


- equal


-opposite of capitalism

Fascism:

- extreme right wing


- people are stronger together


-purpose of individual is to serve the state


-always in state of war


-unquestioning obedience is demanded

Democracy:

-ruled by the people


-2 types


1. direct- purest form, all people are directly involved in decision making


2. representative- used today, societies are to large so we elect someone to make decisions on our behalf

- increasing tension - colonies appearing in europe

- new german leader - wilhelm was aggressive and unfriendly - tried to gain more territory aggressively

Underlying causes:

-colonialism and economic competition

-pro-war (haven't experienced it yet)

- to be dominant power in Balkans

- believed Germany should be punished, but not on idea of revenge- but rather to resolve peace

- needed support in elections- wanted to please the public

Clemenceau's main goals?

-wanted complete revenge against Germany for taking Alsace Lorraine


- very harsh

Orlandos main goals?

- wasn't involved in majority of decision making


- constantly switched sides between allies and entente

Terms of the treaty of versailles?

Territorial: land was taken away, (ex Alsace loran given back to france) germany shrunk while france and italy grew


Military: Reduced army to 100,000 men, no tanks or air force, minimal naval forces


Finaical: Pay for all costs of war (big bill), industrial goods were reduced - effected their economy


General: War guilt claws- Germany had to accept full responsibility for the war
