George Pullman
-Known for the invention of the Pullman sleeper car; which led to the ability for easier travel on the railways
-Built his own town for his workers in order for them to have a clean and sufficient place to live
-He was in charge of everything in the town
-Town ended with not being as successful as he imagined when his workers went on strike in 1894 due to unhappiness on their wages

-Unionizing all railway workers, regardless of craft or service
-Led the strike against George Pullman when he reduced the wages of his workers

-After the civil war when the North won the north wanted to reconstruct the south
-Amendments such as the 13th and 14th were passed
-The South met this with opposition

-The 13th amendment abolishes slavery within the United States, and allows congress to punish those not following the laws
-The 14th amendment which followed gave blacks full citizenship

-After the North won the civil war there was resistance from the south
-There was question on how to treat the newly freed slaves
-Black Codes were the opposition to the reformation and were codes that made it extremely difficult for newly freed slaves
-For example the vagrancy law where any black without a job would be arrested
-However there were no jobs or educational opportunities offered.
Carpet Baggers
-derogatory name southerners gave northerners
-a term used for travelers who often carried carpet bags
-After the civil war in 1865 the south was opposing reconstruction and creating such things as the vagrancy laws
-some northerners chose to move to the south in order to aid the freed slave
-which were freed under the 13th amendment
