Confucianism
Started by Kongzi/Confucius that values respecting your family. Big emphasis on hierarchy within the family and the state. Also that lust must be guarded from youth. Confucius teaching became the most influential throughout Chinese society.
Legalism
Chinese philosophy written by Shang Yang that taught: humans are evil and government must be intrusive to keep them under control. Harsh law codes are then written and harsh punishments come about. Legalists do not like Confucianism and there is no longer a strong feel of family loyalty: everyone for themselves.
Qin Shi Huangdi
King Zheng of Qin that is the first emperor of China- unites all of the states. He ruled harshly so that none of his rivals would rise against him.
Liu Bang
AKA: Han Gaozu.The ruler of the Han Dynasty that worked his way up the social ladder from being a peasant. After he defeats Xiang Yu he becomes emperor and brings back Confucian thought. Spreads China's culture to the West and to Persia.
Han Dynasty
Set the bar for later Chinese history. Moved the capital to Chang'an and is built upon Confucian philosophy.
Grand Canal
The Sui Dynasty's major contribution to society. Allows for easier communication between north and south China.
Tang Dynasty
The dynasty that kept China together. With the Grand Canal built, they took advantage and began the Silk Road- the Golden Age of China. Many believe the decline was a direct result of the rule of an empress.
Wu Zhao
A member of the court during Gaozong's rule. She gets pregnant but loses it and blames Gaozong's wife. They eventually kill her and she becomes empress. After Gaozong dies, she rules for 20 years. Her rule leads to the decline of the Tang Dynasty.
Song Dynasty
The last unifying dynasty.Furthered China's bank system and brought rice from Vietnam. They are very conservative and started the practice of foot binding- this severely restricts women.
Temujin
Major ruler of the Mongol Dynasty.He rules with an iron fist in order to scare his enemies. He was very interested in trade. His rule began very violent but then became more peaceful.
Ming Dynasty
The dynasty that Yongle started after he took over after the Yuan Empire. Made a great naval fleet by sending Zheng He on his travels as well as established the Forbidden City.
Zheng He
Head officer to Yongle. He built up the Forbidden City to make the life of the emperor a mystery. Yongle gave him a treasure fleet to go around the coast of Africa. He established markets for the Chinese all over.
Ibn Battuta
He was a Moroccan Berber Muslim scholar and traveler. Often considered one of the best explorers- traveled the most for his time. He wrote accounts of his travels to Islamic lands from China to Spain and the western Sudan.
flagellants
Group the believed that God and the Church was corrupt. They would go out in public and whip themselves- gained many followers. They started a rumor that the Jews from Germany were starting sicknesses. They lost many of the followers after awhile and public whippings were outlawed.
Lorenzo di Medici
Owner of the largest bank house in Florence that moved his way up by paying people off. He becomes one of the biggest crime bosses and the Pope conspires to assassinate him.
Henry the Navigator
Influences the success of Portugal greatly. He never really ruled but his brother did. He got much of the credit for the exploration of Africa even though he never actually traveled. He put the needs of the state first- took money out of the royal bank to give to the explorers
Enrique IV of Castile
Was married to Joanna of Portugal as a marriage alliance. He couldn't reproduce and his wife had an illegitimate daughter. He broke her nose so that she could look more like him. Leads to the rule of Isabella.
Isabella of Castile
She grows up knowing that she will one day rule- she builds up relationships with the Spanish Church. People want her to have a marriage alliance with Alfonso of Portugal but she wants to make sure she has the upper hand. Marries Ferdinand of Aragon and angers the Portuguese.
Treaty of Tordesillas
Between Spain and Portugal. Cut South America in half- Spain got the west and Portugal got the east.Spain gets the worse half but this starts the colonial age.
Aztecs
Empire located in Mexico that valued human sacrifice- especially women. The civilization built pyramids and temples to worship gods for astronomy.
Hernan Cortes
His explorations led to the demise of the Aztec Empire due to his violence towards them. He joined with Aztec subjects. Among one of the first waves of explorers to colonize the Americas.
Great Zimbabwe
A city that is now in ruins. The building were made for the upper class such as priests. Mixed farming and cattle herding provided a lot of economic revenue for the city.
