To protect the cell from the outside environment and also to compartmentalize the cell.

How well do membranes stain? How well can you see membranes in a light microscope?

Membranes don't stain well. You cannot see simple membranes with a light microscope. You can see a fuzzy microvilli and maybe some villi though?
