Autonomist/Liberal Party
made up of liberal creoles and conservative separatists (they want control over local affairs and representation in the Spanish parliment).
Unión Constitucional
party comprised of ‘hardlined’ Spaniards (didn’t want ANY reforms or concessions, really disliked Cubans, and labeled autonomy as a form of betrayal).
Cuban Revolutionary Party (PRC)
organized in 1892 in Tampa and Key West, FL and founded by José Martí with the support of Cuban cigar makers. The most radical constituency of Cuba. (Opted out of normal political processes, wanted Cuba as a sovereign nation and felt that it could only be achieved through war. It’s two main elements were political and military).
Los Humildes
‘the humble people.’ They bring together the possibility of agency and believes that coming together can transform the state of Cuba. Introduces the idea of racial equality and justice in Cuba.

Annexationists
- wished to be annexed by the U.S. instead of being liberated. In the eyes of the U.S., they considered that the wealth and intelligence of cuba all wanted to be annexed, despite this being a clear minority. Furthermore, their hopes were dashed upon the enactment of the Teller Amendment.
Independents
wanted “Cuba libre” from both Spain and the United States. Were grossly disappointed that the U.S. couldn’t mind its own bee’s wax. Objected vehemently to the terms of the Teller amendment, saying that it was unfair.

Cuban insurgents; term describing the revolutionaries concerning their use of machete wielding tactics similar to Eutimio Mambí who fought the Spaniards in the early 1800s. Term also described African troops.

Cuban Junta of National Renovation
led by Fernando Ortiz, it want to end political corruption, judicial reorganization, and electoral reform and called for the protection of Cuban industry, commerce, and agriculture as well as the renegogiation of reciprocal trade relations with the U.S. in 1922. Also, it created a social agenda that demanded labor reform, prison reform, and an expansion of health services.
Veterans and Patriots Movement-
brings the honorable members of the Liberation Army with the Patriots, first Republican born generation. They challenged conservative and liberal parties with an agenda, were against Zayas, and entered a conspiracy with unaffected members of the Army. The movement is dissolved after leaders are arrested for conspiracy.

established in 1922. Called for reforms such as the establishment of high professional standards for faculty and increased government support of education. Other resolutions called for the end of the Platt Amendment as well as the end of graft and government corruption. Convoked first National Student Congress.

a group of Habanero writers walked out on the presidential address of Zayas in 1923. They then drafted a notice saying they were honored to begin a movement against the immorality of the government. The notice is what is known as the protest of 13.

a political action group organized in 1923 by Rubén Martínez Villena, which intended to organize opposition to the corrupt Cuban government.

another group organized in 1923 by Cuban intellectuals. Under the idea of minorismo, the group united the republican generation of intellectuals around the goal of cultural renewal and national redepmtion. Minorismo also denounced U.S. imperialism while asking for agrarian and labor reform
National Workers Congress
met in Havana in 1914, demanding preference to the hiring of Cuban workers, an eight-hour workday, a reduction to the cost of living and the establishment of a government ministry to support labor demands.
ABC Revolutionary Society
biggest revolutionary party to take form that was a terrorist (by modern american standards) organization in 1931. It was organized around underground cells, in which members of each individual cell could not identify each other, if discovered by the govt. Was made up of the profesisonals, young people, merchants, teachers, white collar workers, blue collar people.
OCRR (Radical Revolution Cellular Organzation)
same types of organizational structure and people as the ABC, but these people came out of the providences. They utilized bombs for the communication lines, sabotage, assasinations of political people, etc. Armed struggle and sabotage were the main means used to try and overthrow Machado.
National Confederation of Workers in Cuba (CNOC)
conglomeration of more than eighty-two trade organizations which sought large reforms in the workplace and government. Eventually joins with the PCC.
Radical Socialist Party
was created in 1920. They called for the socialization of property, the construction of public housing, improvement of work conditions for women and children, amnesty for workers arrested in strikes, equal women’s rights like suffrage, and the abolishment of the Platt Amendment.
Anti-Imperialist League
American chapter was formed in 1898 to protest the U.S. involvement in the Cuban war for independence and saw the occupation of Cuba as annexation. Argued to end the occupation.
vCuban Communist Party (PCC)
is formed in 1925 out of the CNOC, although the modern creation was organized in 1965. Developed strategies for organizing political support among unions, rejected electoral politics, established educational programs for workers and organized a youth movement.
People’s Socialist Party (PSP)
new party that emerged in 1944 from the PUR/PCC as a result of an alliance that Batista had made with formerly suppressed Communists in exchange for their political support in the 1939 Consititutional convention elections and the 1940 presidential elections.

Porra
oon squads constructed by Machado a.k.a. para-military troops, formed torture squads. Went to anti-government demonstrations, while posed as civilians and recorded information about people who were against the Machado administration. Also had a Porra Feminina which was made up of women who would beat up other women because men who beat up women is not seemly.

designed to mobilize and organize youths between the ages of 14 and 27.

created in 1961, it organized farmers and peasants to support the revolution.
Integrated Revolutionary Organizations (ORI)
umbrella organization for the three forces of the revolution: the 26 July Movement, the PSP, and the DRE. Formed the nucleus for the formation of the new PCC in 1965.
Military Units to Aid Production (UMAP)
created in 1965, with the intent of drafting dissidents and social deviants into the army for rehabilitation; was disbanded in 1967.
