Describe the roles that Joseph and Sarah Hodgkins played in the Revolutionary War.

Both believed in the cause. Joseph, a "minute man" in the town, became a captain in the continental army, in which he served for four years before renlisting after Ipswich disbanded.

While Joseph was away Sarah cared for their children and her aging FIL while she also cared for the farm. In addition, she made clothing to send to Joseph. She accomplished all of these tasks while living under the threat of plunder and rape by nearby enemy soldiers.

Joseph sent home a meager soldier's wage and the family did without many "luxuries."
