Brahman, Atman
Brahman (ultimate reality), Atman (deepest self)
Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva
three manifestations of Brahman (creator, preserver, destroyer)
Arjuna, Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita
the song of the Lord, Krishna is there to teach Arjuna (who doubts the wisdom of fighting his relatives) the way to resolve the tension and join the battle. The deity Vishnu is incarnated as Lord krishna. Krishna is instructing Arjuna on the meaning of life.
Reincarnation, Avidya, Karma, Jiva
Reincarnation- the soul takes on new bodies, even as the old bodies die

Avidya- the engine that drives rebirth - ignorance of one's true nature

Karma- one's actions, for good or for ill, determine one's fate in subsequent incarnations

Jiva- the individual souls that undergo a continual process of birth and rebirth (reincarnation)

Atman and Brahman are one.

Interpretations by:
Sankara - absolute unity; Brahman=Atman; The only way of really knowing Brahman - to experience the unity of Brahman & Atman; wisdom tradition; pantheism - all is God, nothing is not God; monism - the absolute unity of existence

Ramanuja- tradition of devotion; Bhagavad-Gita is important; Atman is inseparable from Brahman, but not identical; Atman= the body of Brahman, Brahman- the soul of the universe; panentheism- all is in (inseparable from) God; qualified monism

Madhva- Atman & Brahman have an identity of ethical purpose

* Varna- the word for caste - color
* Brahmins- the priestly caste
