How did the aesthetic preference for a certain type of Bollywood voice develop? What transnational and global influences did we see and hear in our Hindi film music examples?
Lata Mangeshkar was a mass-production singer, who although had an initially-disapproved high, nasally voice, became the national icon of Hindi film music. Singers that followed her generation began training themselves to have that high, nasal sound.
Transnational and global influences that were seen in the film music examples were
“Jaan Pehechaan Ho” -mostly western
“Jap Tak Hai Jaan” -middle eastern vibe, latin american/spanish, violins, classical Indian drums, language, western setting
“Won Ladki”- irish sounding, celtic dancing references, american folk music sound
How has Hindustani classical music been globalized, particularly influencing popular music in the Western world?
Hindustani classical music was globalized by George Harrison of the Beatles, an immensely popular singer and group in the West. It started with his song, “Norwegian Wood,” where a sitar player is present.
