What are adult stem cells?

They are stem cells found in tissue and bones marrow of children and adults. They can only specialise into the type of cell of the tissue they're found in

What is meiosis?

It is the division of gametes

Sex cells

Where and when are somatic stem cells found?

They are found in a blastcyst of a developing zygote. (Around 5 - 8 days old).

What is cell differentiation?

When a cell becomes specialised to carry out a SPECIFIC function.

Specialised cells can only express the genes characteristics of that cell type through GENE EXPRESSION.

• example: muscle cell switches on the genes to carry out it's functions and other genes that the cell does not need is switched off.

True or false: a red blood cell has the genetic information of a muscle cell.

True: the muscle cells genes are switched off

What is it meant by the term pluropotent?

They are stem cells and can change into every cell type

Stem cells

What is it meant by multipotent?

They are adult stem cells that can only change into the cell type of the tissue they're found in

Adult stem cells

What are germline cells?

It is the cell that produces gametes.

• they can divide by mitosis to produce more germline cells or by meiosis to produce gametes

What will happen if a mutation happens in a germline cell?

The mutation will end up int the gametes and show up in future offspring

What is a benign tumor?

A non cancerous overgrowth of cells

What is a malignant tumor?

A cancerous overgrowth of cells
