What is Herpes Zoster caused by? |
varicella-zoster - the same virus responsible for chicken pox |

What kind of history will pt usually have? What disease? |
A history of having chicken pox before, because the virus lies dorment in the pt's system after they have had chicken pox |

Until when does the virus lie dorment? |
Virus lies dormant until resistance to infection becomes lowered |

What does shingles do to the body? |
Causes inflammation of spinal ganglia & small vesicles along peripheral nerve fibers of spinal ganglia |

What are the risk factors for shingles? |
Risk factors include suppressed immunity, aging, infection, stress |

Complications of shingles |
Can result in eye complications that can result in blindness, deafness, brain inflammation, & death |

What happens when vesicles erupt? |
The eruption is proceded by pain. The vesicles erupt in line along the involved nerve. The eruption form a crust, and the serous fluid in the vesicle may become purulent. The virus can also affect the lumbar, cervical or cranial area. |

How long does the painful condition usually run? |
7 to 28 days |

Severe burning or knife like pain; extreme tenderness & pruritus; general malaise |
