Inguinal

Femoral

Umbilical

Excisional

Epigastric

HERNIA DEFINITION

Protrusion of all or part of a viscous through normal or abnormal opening

INGUINAL

90% of hernias, mostly in men

Direct = medial to inferior epigastric vessels

Indirect = through inguinal canal, lateral to vessels

FEMORAL

More common in females

Through femoral canal

Likely to obstruct/strangulate due to tight hernia ring

FEMORAL VS INGUINAL

F - Neck arises below and lateral to pubic tubercle

I - neck arises above and medial to pubic tubercle

HERNIA COMPLICATIONS

Incarceration (irreducible)

Obstruction

Strangulation

UMBILICAL

Common in babies

Normally resolve spontaneously

High risk of complications

EPIGASTRIC

Circular as opposed to oblong divarication of the recti

DoR does not need repair

INCISIONAL

Weakness of scar tissue

Increases risk of wound infection
