* Restores devastated Yang: diarrhea (undigested food), chills, cold extremities, & a faint or hidden pulse.

- Warms the fire & assists the yang: weakness or deficiency of the Heart, Spleen, or Kidney yang . idely used herb especially when the pattern involves interior cold from yang xu.

- Disperses cold, warms the channels, & alleviates pain: wind-damp-cold bi, especially when cold predominates.

C&C:
- yin xu with illusory cold & true heat.

- bei mu, gua lou, bai ji
- bai wei, wu gong, xi jiao, lu dou

reckless movement of hot blood.

A&I:
* Warms the Kidneys & fortifies the yang: wide variety of problems from Kidney yang xu & waning of the Ming Men. Also for waning of the Spleen & Kidney yang with abdominal pain & cold, reduced appetite, & diarrhea.

- Leads the fire back to its source: principle herb for treating upward floating of deficient yang (flushed face, wheezing, severe sweating, weak & cold lower extremities, & a deficient & rootless pulse). Heat above/Cold below.

- Disperse deep cold , warm channels, unblock the channels & vessels & alleviates pain: deep cold causing qi stagnation & blood stasis. amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, damp-cold bi, yin-type boils, abscesses or sores that do not heal.

- Encourages the generation of qi & blood: auxiliary herb for chronic qi or blood xu.

C&C:
- Any Heat Signs
- Pregnancy

Properties:
Spicy, Bitter, Hot, Slightly Toxic, Very Dry

A&I:
* Warms the middle, disperses cold, relieves constraint in the Liver Channel, & alleviates pain: Liver & Stomach channel disorders from cold or phlegm (*headaches, epigastric pain with nausea, wiry or weak pulse). Also cold shan disorders in the area traversed by the Liver channel.

- Redirects rebellious qi downward & stops vomiting

- Warms the Spleen, stops diarrhea, dries damp, & expels damp cold: diarrhea from Spleen or Kidney xu

- Leads fire downward: sores of the mouth & tongue. (grind herb to powder, mix with vinegar, & place on soles of feet).

C&C:
- Any Heat Signs.
- yin xu
- antagonizes dan shen
- counteracts zi shi ying

- treat with decoction of gan cao to reduce side effects (dry throat).

- pregnancy
- counteracts kuan dong hua, fu zi, fang feng
- antagonizes gua lou

- Warms the Kidneys & aids the yang: impotence, clear vaginal discharge from Kidney yang xu (womb cold) - could have weak legs.

C&C:
- Any heat - xu or shi
- do not combine with Yu Jin

- Regulates the qi & harmonizes the Stomach: Stomach cold (abdominal pain, indigestion, reduced appetite, & vomiting.

Dosage: up to 9g.
- can be applied as compress locally on the abdomen for cold & pain in stomach.
