* Redirects the qi downward & expels phlegm: for coughing or wheezing w/ thick sputum due to heat in the Lungs.

- Releases wind from the exterior: for externally contracted wind-heat or wind-cold patterns (coughing & copious sputum). Most often used in wind-heat patterns.

C&C:

Bitter, Sweet, Slightly Cold

A&I:
* Clears heat & transforms phlegm: for many types of cough, chiefly chronic cough, cough with signs of fire due to Yin Xu.

- Clears heat & dissipates nodules: disorders in which phlegm-fire collects & produces nodules, sores, swelling, scrofula, & Lung or breast abcess.

C&C:
- Incompatible w/ Wu Tou & Qin Jiao

Dosage: up to 12g
- 1.5g when taken as powder.
- Raw unprocessed herb is toxic & should NEVER be taken internally.

- Promotes healing of sores: adjunct for breast abscesses & swellings as well as sores that have not yet suppurated.

- Relieves toxicity & expels pus: carbuncles, sores - Especially for breast abcesses. This can be used both internally & topically.

C&C:
- Pregnancy
- Diarrhea due to cold from deficiency of the Spleen & Stomach.

* Clears & transforms phlegm-heat

- Clears the Heart and arrests convulsions: spasms & convulsions due to phlegm-heat, wind-stroke with phlegm obstruction & gurgling sounds in the throat, and childhood convulsions. Especially used for treating children.

C&C:
None

* Clears heat & stops vomiting: vomiting of bitter or sour material due to heat in Stomach w/ bad breath, aversion to heat, & yellow, greasy tongue. Effective in stopping vomiting & can be used with appropriate herbs to treat other types of vomiting - including morning sickness.

- Cools the blood & stops bleeding.

C&C:
-Nausea & vomiting from Stomach cold or cold food stagnation.

Fu Hai Shi

* Clears heat, redirects Lung qi downward, and transforms phlegm: thick, difficult to expectorate sputum with chest & rib pain

- Softens hardness & dissipates nodules: phlegm-fire goiter & scrofula

- Promotes urination & expels dampness: turbid (cloudy) lin & vaginal discharge.

- In its calcined powdered form, for epigastric pain & acid regurgitation.

Hai Ge Ke

- Encourages the expression of rashes

- up to 9g (3-5 pieces)

Pang Da Hai
Channels:
HT, LIV, LU

Properties:
Bitter, Neutral

A&I:
* Dissipates nodules & reduces masses: goiter, also for many kinds of cancers, especially those involving the esophagus, stomach, uterus, & colon.

- Cools the blood & stops bleeding: vomiting blood, coughing up blood, & uterine bleeding

- Reduces toxicity of toxic swellings: sores, snakebites, and dog bite.

C&C:
- weak stomach
- liver disease: significant liver damage & jaundice has resulted from the use of tinctures of this herb
- Overdose - abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting.

Dosage: up to 15g.
- Often taken with wine, or directly in powder or pill form.
