Decibels
The magnitude or strength of sound is measured in decibels.

Decibels are on a ratio and relative scale.

On a physical parameter that can be measured.
Linear Scale
All units are the same size.

Each incremental change at one end is equal the incremental change at the other end of the scale.

Represented graphically.
Logarithimic Scale
Each unit on scale is larger than the preceding unit.

We perceive changes in sound intensity on a logarithmic scale.
Geometric Progression
Sound does not change in a linear fashion.
Absolute Scale
0 point represents absence of what is being measured.
Relative Scale
No true zero point. Zero is arbitrarily chosen.
Ratio Scale
A measurement scale in which a certain distance along the scale means the same thing no matter where on the scale you are, and where "0" represents the absence of what is being measured.
