Gastric Bypass/ Bariatric Surgery
a major surgery that shrinks the stomach's capacity from "wine bottle" to "shotglass size" and reconfigures the small intestine
How Does Gastric Bypass Surgery Help Patients Lose Weight?
It reduces the stomach. The patient can't eat as much. In most instances, if a bypass patient eats sugar or fatty foods, it provokes a dumping syndrome that causes flushing, nausea, and sweating. It's almost like Antabuse for the obese.
Why is the "State of Ketosis" Controversial?
The trouble is that research doesn't back it up. Low blood sugar hasn't been directly linked to hunger, and unless you have diabetes, blood sugar remains stable anyway. The state causes short-term weight loss and long-term harm to the body.
Risks of Atkins Diet
an increased risk of breast cancer, and heart disease, not to mention headaches, constipation, and even bad breath; you lose weight in ways that will cause long-term damage on your body.
"We Live in a Toxic Environment"
We are living in an evironment where we are surrounded by food that is tasty, cheap, plentiful, and oftentimes unhealthy. Bad food is cheap, heavily promoted, and engineered to taste good. Healthy food is hard to get, not heavily promoted, and expensive.
1st Law of Fat
Anything you eat beyond your immediate need for energy converts to fat. Overeat and you'll get fatter.
2nd Law of Fat
The line between being in and out of energy balance is slight. A few extra calories everyday for a year can mean an extra 10 lbs.
BMI (Body Mass Index)
weight divided by your height; defines obesity
Overweight
condition when BMI is 25
Obese
condition when BMI is 30
Morbidly Obese
condition when BMI is over 40
