1st Stage
dilation of cervix: 12-18 hours; usually begins when the amniotic sac ("bag of waters") bursts (may let go in one big gush) * water breaks*; contractions begin, baby trapped in uterus until the cervix is dilated
2nd Stage
approximately 2 hours; occurs when baby's head enters the birth canal * baby born*; very painful (woman may ask for pain relief); stage is over when baby is born; baby should be born head first, face down; mom may have an epidural
