Adaptation

The changes people undergo in making positive adjustments to circumstances in their live

Quality of Life

Individuals’ appraisals of the degree to which their lives contain features that they find satisfying or meaningful

Asthma

A psychophysiological disorder of the respiratory system in which bronchial inflammation and spasms lead to episodes of difficult breathing

Epilepsy

A chronic condition of the nervous system that produces recurrent seizures

Spinal Cord Injury

Neurological damage in the spine that impairs motor and sensory function

Type 1 Diabetes

Chronically elevated blood sugar levels because the pancreas produces little or no insulin




- Require daily insulin supplements




- Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)


Type 2 Diabetes

Chronically elevated blood sugar levels even though the pancreas does produce at least some insulin




- Can manage their conditions without insulin supplements




- Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).

Arthritis

A category of painful and potentially disabling chronic conditions that involve inflammation of the joints

Alzheimer’s Disease

A chronic and progressive brain disorder marked by a loss of cognitive functions, such as memory

Self-management

Methods used in helping people gain control over the conditions in their environment that encourage undesirable behaviors
