Why does attention wane as a lecture progresses?

Attention is a limited resource; the longer we pay attention, the more attention declines.

How do we measure on-task attention during lecture?

Using probes that ask for mental state or state of attention at given intervals during a lecture.

What is mind wandering? What is the difference between intentional and unintentional mind wandering? Is mind wandering good or bad for learning?

Losing focus on the lecture and thinking about other things.

Intentional MW is voluntary, we choose to mind wander because we want to - perhaps the lecture is boring.

Unintentional MW is involuntary, our attention declines as a lecture goes on and sometimes we unknowingly daze off.

Does interpolated quizzing during a lecture improve on-task attention and memory for the lecture material?

Interpolated quizzing can help improve attention by reducing unintentional MW, but it can cause an increase in intentional MW.

Although this may affect academic performance in the short run, the reduction in unintentional MW will help improve academic performance in the long run.

Why might exercise improve on-task attention during a lecture?

Heightens arousal through an increase blood flow to arousal centers.

Describe the details of the exercise breaks study. Who did they test? What did they measure? How did they divide participants? What did they find? What does it mean? What were the limitations of the study?

Wanted to see if having exercise breaks could improve attention and memory during a lecture.

3 groups:

Exercise break group

Non-exercise break group

Control

Exercise group was much better at sustaining attention throughout the lecture (higher attention at T1 and T2)

Exercise group did better on the immediate test and the delayed test (48 hours later)

Shows that aerobic exercise has the potential to boost executive functioning, help sustain attention, and improve academic performance.

Is there a correlation between physical activity and academic performance? Does this differ for males and females?

A higher fitness score is associated with higher test scores. This pattern is shown to a greater extend with females than males.
