Amniocentesis
done when baby is 14-16 weeks forming; can detect up to 2,000 different genetic defects; a needle is inserted through abdomen wall and the uterus, and amniotic fluid is extracted; tests the fetus' cells; primary reason to have this test is maternal age over 35; test causes 1/1000 miscarriages
Sonogram/Ultrasound
done in week 8; test will show location of baby; done in week 14; test will show gender; test can show number of babies, can generate sound waves (listen to baby heartbeat), size of baby, genetic structure; DOES NOT give genetics (amniocentesis does that)
Ectopic Pregnancy
fetus is implanted in fallopian tube instead of uterus, fetus will eventually cause tube to rupture
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
detects chromosomal abnormalities such as Down's Syndrome, trisomy 13, trisomy 18, as well as other genetic disorders; can have it done earlier than amniocentesis
Apgar Test
performed 1 min - 5 min after birth; predicts survivability; tests cardiac stress, respiratory status, muscle tone, reflexes, and color (should become pink after first breath is taken), a score of 7 to 10 is normal
Breastfeeding vs. Bottle
Breastfeeding is better because it's more nutritional: fatty acids, lactose, water, amino acids for digestion, brain development and growth; fewer illnesses (contains colostrum); bonding between mama and baby; less money; cow's milk contains a different type of protein that can be difficult to digest; breastfeeding can pass on viruses and more from mom to child
Prevention
pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should watch out for nutrition, smoking, drug use, etc.
