Mental Disorder
A mental illness or emotional problem; is described by patterns of thinking or behavior that cause a person significant emotional pain or prevent normal functioning; they disrupt a person's life, influence their entire lifestyle
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
an uncontrollable need to perform an action
Dementia
impaired mental ability (associated with Alzheimer's Disease); degenerative and progressive (it only increases and spreads); once it starts there is no way to heal it or get back the things you lost; life-threatening condition
Alzheimer's Disease
a brain disease that brings mental confusion, inability to function , and in the final stage, death (form of dementia)
Autism
a bio-neurological disability that affects areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function; some people may have an extraordinary talent
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
an impairment with the ability to pay attention; often with hyperactivity and poor impulse control; give Ridulin (a form of speed [an amphetamine]) to patients to help them with impulse control and hyperaction
PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
a reaction to traumatic stress that arises when the event is occuring, accompanied by severe anxiety
Schizophrenia
a condition of losing touch with reality accompanied by reduced ability to function; the person may experience hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia
Bipolar Disorder
illness that causes shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function
Phobia
an extreme, irrational fear of an object or situation
Anorexia
a disorder of self-starvation to the extreme; extreme exercise can make anorexia appear because of excessive exercise and food portions that are too small for the exercise; this is the most life-threatening of the mental disorders
Bulimia
repeated binge-eating, usually followed by vomiting (purging); may involve no vomiting, but just an excessive use of laxatives
Depression
the condition of feeling discouraged or hopeless; most common mental disorder; exercise can help treat mild depression
Addiction
a physical or psychological craving; dependence on a substance, habit, or behavior
Trichotillomania
a type of psychological condition that involves urges to pull out one's own hair; compulsive behavior; one strand at a time or in large clumps; pull from head, eyebrows, eyelashes, or pubic area
