the 3 types of skin cancer

1. basal cell carcinoma - 80% of skin cancers.


-sun exposed areas esp. head and neck


-pearly erythematous translucent papules


-slow growth, almost never mets



2. Squamous cell carcinoma - 16% skin CAs


-crusted hyperkeratotic lesions with rough surface or flat reddish patches with an inflamed or ulcerated appearance.



3. Melanoma - 4%.


-arise from pigment-producing melanocytes


-mets can spread rapidly


-cause 80% of skin CA deaths.



ABCDEs - asymmetry, border irregularity (ragged, notched, blurred), Color (esp blue and black mixed with white and red), Diameter > 6mm, Evolution or change in size, symptoms, or morphology.
