Syncope

"Fainting". Temporary loss of consciousness caused by fall in blood pressure.

Vertigo

When a person feels like if they or the objects around them are moving when they are not. Often feels like a spinning or swaying movement.

Malaise

A general feeling of discomfort, illness, or uneasiness.

Myalgia

Muscle pain

Arthralgia

Joint pain

Paresthesia

An abnormal sensation, typically tingling or pricking (“pins and needles”), caused chiefly by pressure on or damage to peripheral nerves.

Romberg's Test

A test of the body's sense of positioning (proprioception). Involves having them stand with their feet together and eyes closed, and watching for swaying.




Can be used to assess for impairment due to alcohol, or for general neurological function.

Hyperesthesia

Excessive physical sensitivity, especially of the skin.

Proprioception

The ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium. Ex: you can close your eyes and still tell where your body parts are.

Clonus

Muscular spasm involving repeated, often rhythmic, contractions.

Nuchal rigidity

The inability to flex the neck forward due to rigidity of the neck muscles.




Keyword: inability. If they still have FROM in the neck, even if it's extremely painful, it's not nuchal rigidity.

Kernig's sign

Tested by having the patient lay supine, and flexing their hip and knee, then extending their leg at the knee. Back pain and resistance to extension is a positive Kernig's sign.


Indication of meningeal irritation. Even more suggestive when it is bilateral.

Brudzinski's sign

Isthe appearance of involuntary lifting of the legs when lifting a patient's headoff the examining couch, with the patient lying supine. Indicates meningeal irritation.

Dysphagia

Difficulty or discomfort in swallowing

Bradykinesia

Slowness of movement. One of the cardinal manifestations of Parkinson's disease.

Stereognosis

The mental perception of depth or three-dimensionality by the senses, usually in reference to the ability to perceive the form of solid objects by touch.




Basically, give them an object with their eyes closed and have them identify it.

Graphesthesia

The ability to recognize writing on the skin purely by the sensation of touch.




I.e.; draw a letter on their back and see if they can tell you what it is.
