ambiguity
the intentional use of language that can have more than one meaning
aphorism
a concise, witty saying, e.g. “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
apostrophe
a figure of speech in which an absent person or thing is addressed directly. An example is: “O Death, where is thy sting?”
assonance
the repetition of vowel sounds anywhere in the words, e.g. “bright lights.”
consonance
repetition of consonant sounds where the vowels before the consonants differ, creating a partial rhyme, e.g. “struts and frets.”
irony
a figure of speech in which the literal meaning is the opposite of the intended meaning, or there is a difference in what seems to be, and what actually is.
paradox
a seemingly absurd or contradictory statement that contains some truth.
pun
a play on a word which has more than one meaning, e.g. “the lifeguards agreed to pool their resources.”
exposition
The part of a play or work of fiction in which the background to the main conflict is introduced.
rising action
the series of events that occur which are building up tension towards the main conflict
climax
point of highest tension or drama or when the action starts in which the solution is given
falling action
Occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved
catastrophe
the final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved
anagnorisis
Moment in a play or other work when a character makes a critical discovery
hamartia
a fatal flaw leading to the downfall of a tragic hero or heroine.
nemesis
the inescapable or implacable agent of someone's or something's downfall
peripateia
a plot device in a play through which a character's situation changes dramatically from secure to vulnerable.
