Ghost has appeared twice before. Horatio waits with Barnardo and Marcellus to see the Ghost. Ghost appears but does not speak. Horatio decides to tell Hamlet about Ghost who looks like King Hamlet.

Claudius holds court for first time as new King of Denmark. Thanks subjects for their support, sends ambassadors to Norway to stop an attack from Fortinbras. Allows Laertes to return to France but will not let Hamlet return to Wittenburg. Hamlet, talking to himself, reveals that his mother remarried within a month of father's death. Horatio and others tell Hamlet about Ghost, he agrees to join them that night.

Laertes says goodbye to Ophelia, warns her not to trust Hamlet's love. Polonius says goodbye to Laertes, then echoes his warnings and orders Ophelia not to see Hamlet again.

Claudius is drinking. Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus are visited by the Ghost. Hamlet follows the Ghost, despite his friends' attempts to stop him.

Ghost tells Hamlet that he is the spirit of his father and he reveals that Claudius murdered him. Ghost orders Hamlet to avenge his death, Hamlet vows to "remember" and swears his friends to secrecy. Hamlet says he will put on an "antic disposition".

HAMLET IS "LOVE MAD" SCENE. Polonius sends Reynaldo to Paris to question Laertes' acquaintances. Ophelia tells Polonius about an encounter with an apparently crazy Hamlet. Polonius thinks Hamlet has gone "love mad" and rushes off to tell Claudius.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are sent to spy on Hamlet and discover why he is mad. Ambassadors return from Norway and say they were successful in stopping the planned invasion. Polonius reports that Hamlet is love mad, and Claudius agrees to join Polonius in spying. When Hamlet enters, he is confronted by Polonius first, then R & G. Hamlet can tell R & G are spies for Claudius. A tour of actors enter and Hamlet asks one to perform a speech. Hamlet is ashamed because the actor has more passion in his speech than Hamlet has for avenging his father's death. He plans to discover if Claudius is guilty when the players stage The Murder of Gonzago.

Polonius and Claudius try to use Ophelia to discover why Hamlet is mad; they secretly watch their conversation. (TO BE OR NOT TO BE) At first, Hamlet is polite to Ophelia, but then he turns on her and denies having loved her, asks where her father is, tells her to enter a nunnery, etc. When Hamlet exits, Claudius decides his behavior is not caused by love and plans to send Hamlet to England. Polonius wants Claudius to wait until Gertrude talks to Hamlet after the play that evening.

THE PLAY SCENE. Hamlet makes bitter comments to Ophelia. There is a "dumb show" and then a story that tells the tale of how Claudius seduced Gertrude and murdered King Hamlet. When the Player King is murdered, Claudius stops the play and rushes out. Hamlet believes this is proof he is guilty. Gertrude says she wants to speak to Hamlet.

Claudius tells R & G to take Hamlet to England. Polonius tells Claudius he plans to spy on Gertrude and Claudius's conversation. Claudius reveals his remorse to the audience and tries to pray. Hamlet enters and almost kills Claudius, but stops because he doesn't want Claudius to go to heaven.

POLONIUS' DEATH SCENE. Hamlet talks to Gertrude, she gets scared and calls out for help. Polonius is hiding behind an arras and also cries for help, Hamlet stabs him. Then Hamlet gets mad at Gertrude. The Ghost appears and reminds Hamlet to kill Claudius, but Gertrude can't see the Ghost. When Ghost leaves, Hamlet tells Gertrude to stay away from Claudius and he tells her that Claudius plans to send him to England. He exits dragging Polonius's body.

Gertrude reports Polonius's death. They send R & G to find the body and Hamlet.

Hamlet refuses to tell Rosencrantz and Guildenstern where he put the body.

Claudius tells Hamlet to leave for England. At the end of the scene, Claudius tells the audience he is sending Hamlet to his death.

Fortinbras and army are going to Poland and they cross paths with Hamlet. Hamlet is inspired by Fortinbras's action and resolves to take action himself.

Ophelia enters singing about death and acting crazy. When she leaves, Claudius agonizes over her madness. Laertes appears and is angry about Polonius's death; Claudius swears he is innocent. Laertes is devastated over Ophelia's madness.

Horatio gets a letter from Hamlet saying he boarded a pirate ship and returned to Denmark.

Claudius also gets a letter from Hamlet announcing his return. Claudius asks Laertes to help him plot against Hamlet; Laertes agrees to kill Hamlet with a poisoned rapier in a fencing match. They also have a poisoned cup of wine. Gertrude enters and says that Ophelia has drowned.

Hamlet returns from his journey, enters a graveyard with Horatio where a gravedigger is singing. Hamlet doesn't know whose grave it is. He meditates on the skulls. A funeral procession enters and he learns it's Ophelia's funeral. Laertes leaps into the grave, Hamlet comes forward, they struggle.

Hamlet reveals that R & G were sent to their deaths instead of him. Osric enters and asks Hamlet to fence with Laertes. They have their match, Gertrude drinks from the poisoned cup, etc. Everyone dies in this scene.
