Cell Theory
A scientific theory that describes the properties of cells.
Prokaryotes
A single-celled organism that doesn't have a distinct nucleus or other specialized organs.
Eukaryotes
An organism consisting of a cell or cells that carry DNA in the nucleus.
Nucleus
A dense organelle present in most eukaryotic cells.
Chromosome
A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and proteins in the nucleus of most living cells that carry genes.
Nucleoid
An irregularly shaped region in a prokaryotic cell that contains the genetic information.
Plasmids
A genetic structure in a cell that can replicate independently of the chromosomes.
Flagella
A microscopic slender threadlike appendage that enables many protozoa and bacteria to swim.
Cell Membrane
The semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of the cell.
Cell Wall
A rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of cells.
Ribosomes
A minute particle consisting of RNA and proteins, found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of the cell.
Cytoplasm
The material or protoplasm within a living cell, not including the nucleus.
Cytosol
The aqueous component of the cytoplasm of a cell.
Organelles
Any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell.
Nucleolus
A small dense spherical structure in the nucleus of a cell during interphase.
Cytoskeleton
A microscopic network of proteins filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells.
ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
A network of tubular membranes in the cytoplasm of a cell, with a smooth surface or it can be studded with ribosomes and considered rough.
