What is the location of the pelvis?

Located in the lower torso, the pelvis is a sturdy ring of bones that protects the delicate organs of the abdominopelvic cavity while anchoring the powerful muscles of the hip, thigh, and abdomen. Several bones unite to form the pelvis, including the sacrum coccyx, and the innominate bones.

What are the bones that make up the female pelvis?

Sacrum: a modified segment of the vertebral column, consisting of 5 sacral vertebrae. This paired with the coccyx forms the posterior boundary of the pelvis.

Coccyx: another modified segment of the vertebral column and consists of 4 fused coccygeal vertebrae.

The left and right innominate bones: also known as the hipbones, they form the lateral and anterior borders of the pelvis. They each consist of 3 fused bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis (fuse anteriorly at the pubis symphysis).

What are the three methods utilized to describe the areas of the pelvis?

The true/false pelvis:The pelvis is divided into two portions, the superior portion lying above the line terminalis on the internal innominate bone known as the false pelvis. The true pelvis lies inferior to the false pelvis (inferior to the line terminalis-to the pelvic diaphragm).

Quadrants of the Pelvis: 4 quadrants that are formed by two perpendicular lines that intersect at the umbilicus. Includes the right and left upper quadrants, and the left and right lower quadrants.

Regions of the Pelvis: There are 9 abdominopelvic region including: right and left hypochondriac, left and right lumbar, left and right inguinal, umbilicus, hypergastric, and hypogastric.

What anatomy lies within the false pelvis?

The ileum, and the sigmoid colon.

What anatomy lies within the true pelvis?

Pelvic colon, rectum, bladder, vagina, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and suspensatory ligaments.

What are the components of the pelvic diaphragm?

Lower margin of the pelvic cavity, pelvic floor, is formed by the levator ani (iliococcygeus (includes coccygeus), and pubococcygeus) and puborectalis are known as the pelvic diaphragm.

What are the components of the perineum?

The area below the pelvic floor located between the vagina and the anus. Anterior boundaries include the pubic arch and the arcuate ligament of the pubis.
