2 groups - Broccoli (winter) & Calabrese (Summer/early Autumn)
- early spring crops - sow late summer/early autumn - seeds in trays full of moist compost
- 5" transplant cold frame/unheated glass house - harden off and transplant outdoors from Feb - April - 27-30" apart plants/rows - from April sow direct into prepared raked seedbed - sow thinly 12" apart 1/2" deep - transplant layer
Calabrese direct outside early April /seed trays from March - sow successively late March, early may + June - spacing determines size
- ph 6-7.5 - warm sunny site - deep soil - moisture retentive - free draining
- weed free - mulch - do not let dry out - earth up stems of sprouting broccoli
- harvest once heads have formed - little and often - do not let go to flower
- consume fresh - mist unwashed heads/wrap in damp paper towels/refrigerate 2-3 days - don't wash before refrigeration - excess moisture promotes mould
Pest Caterpillars - net plants. Squish butterfly eggs.
Disease Clubroom - ph of soil. Soil too acid and prone to waterlogged makes root swell and distort. Can remain for 20 years. Prevention is key - ph test. Raised beds for drainage. Grown own do not buy seedlings in from other areas. Pot seedlings to encourage strong root. Rotations. |

Potatoes |
- 3 groups - 1st earlies, 2nd earlies, main crop - Farmyard manure 6 weeks before - chit potatoes - 1st in ground mid-spring - 2nd few weeks later - main crop when frost risk passed
- trench 5 inches deep - plant tubers 1 foot apart - trenches 20 inches apart - carefully cover with at least inch of soil
- soil ph 4.5-6 - rich in organic matter - slightly acidic - alkaline/heavy limed encourage scab
- earth up when 8-9inches in height - water 20 inches over growing season - main crop wait until size of marbles
- earlies harvest from early summer - won't store dig as needed - main crop leave in for as long as possible to mature tubers and thicken skins - dry in sun - store in hessian sacks or boxes in cool frost free place - stored above 5dC - below starch turn to sugar
- BLIGHT - brown and yellow patches starts on leaves. Travels down to stem and onto tubers. - cut down leaves first then dig out every tuber. Burn do not compost. - listen weather forcast - water well |
