Statistic?
a value (usually numerical) that describes a sample…may be a single measurement or a set
What do we want to collect on a random sample?
Data.
What are descriptive statistics?
techniques that take raw scores and summarize them in a manageable form
What are inferential statistics?
methods that allow us to study samples and make generalizations about a particular population.
In this class what types of statistics will we be using?
Only descriptive statistics.
What is population?
the total number of individuals having a quality or characteristic in common
What is sample?
a representative part of a large population whose properties are studied, often to gain information about the population.
What is parameter?
a value (usually numerical) that describes a population…may be a single measurement or a set
What is simple random sampling?
every individual from the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample.
What is stratified sampling?
selecting independent samples from a number of subpopulations or groups
What is cluster sampling?
selecting entire groups of individuals that are naturally occurring in the population.
What is matched random sampling?
individuals are matched on a characteristic of interest and randomly placed into groups.
What is systemic sampling?
sampling by rule (e.g., every 10th person).
What is convenience sampling?
sampling from the people to which you have access. Also called opportunity sampling.
What is central tendency?
a statistical measure that identifies a single score as representative of an entire distribution
What are the two types of central tendency?
Typical performance
Average performance
What are the three numerical indicators of central tendency?
Mean, median, mode
What is mode?
Mode – the most common (frequent) score or scores
What is median?
Median – the numerical score or point that cuts the distribution in half
What is mean?
Mean – the arithmetic average
