Types of Therapeutic Groups
-Task Facilitating Groups: are groups that have a goal and they want to reach that goal. Example; Study groups & committees

-Psycho educational Groups: Are used for when they are doing well but they need help in one area. Example; Anger management groups

-Counselling Groups: These are groups that help people who are having trouble in their daily lives. They are meant for problem solving, they are meant for problem solving, they focus on the present. Helps people develop positive attitudes and better interpersonal skills, changes behavior and new skills. Example; Portage

-Psychotherapy Groups: In these groups members deal with series psychological problems. They are meant to reconstruct their personalities. Example; CBT

-They can work in task facilitating groups, psycho-educational groups and counselling groups

*To Increase knowledge of themselves and others
*To help clarify the changes they most want to make in their lives
*To provide the tools necessary to make these changes

*Goodwill and caring
*Belief in the group process
*Openness
*No defensiveness in coping with criticism
Courage: Effective show courage by doing a therapeutic activity first or using self-disclosure

Willingness to model: Act the way you want others to act

Goodwill and caring: Leaders must have a sincere interest in the welfare of others and they must not exploit to boost their ego

Belief in the group process: Must talk the talk, walk the walk and live the life.

Openness: When you reveal enough so the group knows who you are but without sharing too much. Helps the group open up as well.

No defensiveness in coping with criticism: If you are too sensitive to feedback you will have troubles managing a group. If they don't feel they can share with you. the group process wont improve.

Personal Power: Leaders should use self-confidence and not dominate group members

Willingness to seek new experiences: The more you are willing to try something new, the more you will learn

Sense of Humor: Laugh at yourself to lighten the mood & release tension

Intensiveness: Be creative to keep to group interested and fresh

Stamina: Group work can be draining, so you need a lot of energy to get through it.

How to deal with Ethical/Legal Issues in a Therapeutic Group

*Informed Consent
*Involuntary Membership
*Freedom to withdraw from a group
Informed Consent: When group leaders let members know what their rights and responsibilities are. This is so that the members can decide whether they want to join the group or not.

Involuntary Membership: When people are forced to join the group and don't want to be there. Leaders have to deal with this openly.

Freedom to withdraw from group: The group leader should make sure that all policies, such as attendance and membership, are clearly stated. Also the procedures when leaving a group should be explained to all members during the initial group session.

How to deal with Ethical/Legal Issues in a Therapeutic Group

*Confidentiality
Psychological Risks for Members: They need to know what those risks are, and you can prevent issues by developing some kind of rule list or contract that everyone agrees on.

Confidentiality: Making sure that the members know how important it is they know what laws surround confidentiality, take special interest in younger children or those with mental illness who might not understand what confidentiality is, have them sign a contract to not write or talk about what goes on in sessions.
