The first actor/dramatist

Thespis

(his name became the word for actor)

Earliest Playwright. Founder of the Greek tragedy. Brings on the 2nd actor and reduces the role of chorus. Adds action & brings dialogue as a form of communication.

Aeschylus

(Noble birth and fought in the battle of Marathon)

Wrote 123 dramas and added the 3rd actor while making the chorus bigger.

Sophocles

(Dad got him a job as a government worker)

The most controversial playwright b/c he questioned religious beliefs, psychological issues, and morality. Wrote 88 plays and reduces the role of chorus.

Euripides

Introduces comedy (satires, parodies). Characters were mainly satyrs.

Aristophanes

(satyr = half man, half goat)

3. Chorus: Voice of society (sings). Has 2 parts: Strophe (ask question of a character/state an opinion) and Antistrophe (answer the question or reply).

There are 3 keys. (Unity, Play is familiar, and Chorus).

4. Stasimon/Exodus: Closing scene
