Anavysos Kouros


-Kouros= young man


-found in grave yard


-influenced by Cycladic traditions


-also made by marble


-naturalism is being developed so that proportions and muscles are more natural


-similar to Egyptians: stiff, rigid, frontal; different from Egyptians: soft, nude, not geometric, negative space


- function: grave marker of male figure that died in war


-this is a heroic sculpture because he died, they are showing who they could have become


-has small expression of mouth: archaic smile ; suggests humanism

Niobides krater


- found in niobides Greece


-ceramic: red figure pottery


-function: mixing vessels ; tells story of niobi who had 7 daughters and 7 sons and abs said her kids were more beautiful than the God, depicted in the piece as Apollo and Artemis killing her kids


-unique to Greek pottery because so banded register

-Athena is fighting this guy with twisted figure to show drama
