How is B. anthracis tmitted?
inhalation
What are symptoms of B. anthracis?
cough, chest pain, fever, nausea, vomitting blood
Describe anthrax toxin
AB toxin - A is effector and B is attachment; 3 components - protective Ag enabling entry, edema toxin in cAMP, lethal factor kills cells
What are 2 types of food poisoning caused by B. cereus?
diarrheal and emetic
Describe diarrheal food poisoning caused by B. cereus
starts 6-15 hrs after ingestion, diarrhea rarely vomitting, from meats and veggies, heat labile toxin - inc cAMP allowing water into lumen
Describe emetic food poisoning caused by B. cereus
30mins - 6 hrs after ingestion, vomitting rarely diarrhea, from starchy foods, heat stable toxin; tx - replace fluids, prevention - proper food handling
What g+ rod causes eye infections?
B. cereus, following trauma w/ soil contamination, rapidly progressive w/ loss of light perception in 48 hrs
How is Corynebacterium diptheriae tmitted?
resp droplets, facilitated by crowding, immune can be asymptomatic carriers
What are the main characteristics of diptheria?
upper resp inf w/ sore throat and low grade fever, pseudomem formation in tonsils, pharynx, and nasal cavity
What is most common cause of death w/ Corynebacterium diptheriae inf?
myocarditis
What causes psedomem formation w/ diptheria inf?
bacterial toxin kill epi forming fibrosupprative exudates that coagulate, bleed if dislodged, can extend into trachea obstructing breathing
Describe diptheria toxin
phage encoded, AB toxin, Fe dependent, inactivates EF-2 essential for ptn synthesis -> rapid cell death
What is the source of Listeria monocytogenes?
GI of poultry, cattle, sheep, 5-10% are carriers
Who is at risk for Listeria inf?
pregnant women and fetuses, immune compromised
What bacteria causes still birth and septecemia, meningitis, encephalitis in newborns?
Listeria monocytogenes
What are the dx's caused by Listeria in immune compromised?
meningitis, fever, nausea, diarrhea
How is Listeria tmitted?
ingest unpasteurized dairy, congenital during labor
What bacteria can grow at fridge temps and is motile?
Listeria monocytogenes
