Describe the difference between and issue and a problem

Problem: short term/affects a few people

Issue: long term/affects many people

Identify the SPEEC components of analyzing an issue

Discuss the SPEEC related to the Zika virus

Social:

Causes- poverty, poor are typically most affected

Consequences- reduced feelings of safety, healthcare system is strained

Political:

Causes- lack of support from federal government, governmemt response is international, Canadian Blood Services are raising donor barriers

Consequences- slow reaction rate, more of a widespread outbreak, awareness is spread, spread is slow, places pressure on blood supply, contaminated blood not used in transfusions

Economic:

Causes- government funding for vaccines increases, businesses raise workplace safety

Consequences- prevention of spread, less funding towards other things, Canada gets more tourists

Explain the significance of the Pacific ring of fire

The Ring of Fire is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements.

Explain Alfred Wagner's theory of the continental drift

That the Earth is composed of a series of moving plates and that all of the continents used to fit together like jigsaw puzzles before drifting apart

What evidence did Alfred Wagner use to prove his theory about Pangaea

Evidence that supports the theory is that all of the continents are shaped in a way that suggests they all fit together like puzzle pieces

Why are most Earthquakes and volcanoes locates along plate boundaries?

At diverging plate boundaries, earthquakes occur as the plates pull away from each other. Volcanoes also form as magma rises upward from the underlying mantle along the gap between the two plates. We almost never see these volcanoes, because most of them are located on the sea floor.

Describe the different features and significance of the Canadian Shield

The Canadian Shield the largest landform region in Canada. It has flat round hills, metamorphic rock and has the world's oldest rock

Why are the Praries called Canada's breas basket?

Three quarters of Canada's crops are grown in the praries

Name the landform region you live in

Ontario is divided into four regions, including the Canadian Shield, Hudson Bay Lowlands, Great Lakes Lowlands and St. Lawrence Lowlands. The Canadian Shield covers about two-thirds of Ontario.

Why do so few Canadians live in Canada's north?

Because of the climate, there are limited jobs as well as it"s very hard to grow crops so the food that does get imported is far more expensive

Differentiate between weather and climate

Climate- long term conditions, in Canada, the climate relates to seasons

Weather- short term, day to day, temp, precip, wind speed, cloud cover

Describe the factors that affect climate in Canada

What is the difference between a continental and maritime/moderated climate

The difference between maritime and continental climate is that there is less of a temperature variation in a maritime climate, while in a continental climate the climate does fluctuate, such that summers can be hot and winters very cold. In a maritime climate, summers can be cool, and the winters are not very cold.
