3 States of Matter

Solid, Liquid, Gas

Atom

The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element.

state of matter

any of the three forms that matter may ordinarily take: solid, liquid and gas.

Element

matter made up of only one kind of atom. Iron and oxygen are elements.

Chemical Symbol

one or two letters that stand for the name of an element. The chemical symbol for gold is Au

Compound

matter made up of two or more elements chemically combined. Salt is a compound made up of sodium and chlorine.

Substance

a class of matter made up of elements and compounds. Salt and sugar are substances.

Chemical Formula

A group of symbols that shows the kind and number of each element in a single unit of a compound. The chemical formula for carbon dioxide is CO2

Energy

The ability to cause change. The bus uses energy from gasoline to move.

Evaporation

The change of state from a liquid to a gas. The hot sun causes puddles to change to water vapor.

Melting

The change of state from solid to liquid. As the temperature rises, snow and ice change to liquid by melting.

Boiling

The rapid change of state from a liquid to a gas. When water is boiling, bubbles of water vapor form.

Condensation

The change of state from a gas to a liquid. Drops of water form on the outside of a very cold glass because of the condensation of water vapor in the air.

Freezing

The change of state from a liquid to solid. Water turns to ice by freezing.

Water as a solid is ____________

ice

Water as a liquid is _______________

liquid water

Water as a gas is _____________

water vapor

The symbol for Oxygen is ___________

O

The symbol for hydrogen is __________

H

The symbol for iodine is ____________

I

The symbol for iron is __________

Fe

The symbol for gold is ________

Au

The symbol for helium is ___________

He

Describe the state of matter: Gas

is the state of matter that has no definite shape or volume. Movement within is very fast.

Describe the state of matter: Liquid

is the state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape. Movement within is fast.

Describe the state of matter: Solid

is the state of matter that has a definite volume and a definite shape. Movement within is slow.
