Government

the institution through which a society make enforces its public policies

Public Policy

all things governments decide to do, including: taxes, civil rights, etc

Legislative Power

power to make laws and frame public policies

Executive Power

Power to execute, enforce, and administer law

Judicial Power

Power to interpret laws, to determine the meaning, settle disputes

Constitution

Fundamental laws, settling put principles, structures, and processes in government

Dictatorship

Oldest form of government, those who rule cannot be held responsible to the will of the people

Democracy (Direct)

Pure democracy, will of the people is translated into public policy, voted directly through the people themselves

A body of people, living in a defined territory organized poltitically, power to make and enforce laws

Sovereignty

Has supreme and absolute power within its own territory and can decide its own domestic and foreign policies

Autocracy

Single person hold unlimited power

Oligarchy

Government where power to rule is held by a group usually self-appointed elite

Unitary Government

Centralized-all powers held by government belong to single central agency, national government creates local units of government for convenience, the local government and several local governments

Federal Government

Powers are divided between central government and several local governments

Confederate Government

Alliance of Independent States, central government only deals with states that are members

Division of Powers

Basic principle of federalism; the constitutional provisions by which governmental powers are divided on a geographical basis

Presidential Government

Executive and legislative branches of government are separate, independent, but coequal, president is chosen and serves a certain term

Parliamentary Government

Executive government is made up of the prime minister/premier and official's cabinet

Force theory, evolutionary theory, devine right theory, social contract theory

Hobbes

Lived in freedom nature, led to people being brutish and animalistic, government was created to protect and should be all powerful and absolute

Locke

man is inherently good, government is created to benefit the public, if corrupt, government can be overthrown, power should be shared between mulitple sections.
