the identity of the “beloved disciple:”
- was in attendance at the last supper (13:23), therefore, must be one of the Twelve. - He is not Peter, (see 13:23-24). - Since he goes fishing in John 21, and is not Peter, Thomas or Nathaniel, he is one of the sons of Zebedee. - he outlived the misunderstanding about his own death (21:23). Seemingly, this beloved disciple is John, who, in humility, does not use his personal name in his work. This author is known by his readership (21:24, 25), and he knew much more about Jesus’ life and ministry than he could put into writing in this work. |
