Explain how one would argue from internal evidence that the Apostle John is the author of the Gospel of John.
the identity of the “beloved disciple:”

- was in attendance at the last supper (13:23), therefore, must be one of the Twelve.

- He is not Peter, (see 13:23-24).

- Since he goes fishing in John 21, and is not Peter, Thomas or Nathaniel, he is one of the sons of Zebedee.

- he outlived the misunderstanding about his own death (21:23).

Seemingly, this beloved disciple is John, who, in humility, does not use his personal name in his work.

This author is known by his readership (21:24, 25), and he knew much more about Jesus’ life and ministry than he could put into writing in this work.
Provide an argument that John’s primary audience is Jewish unbelievers, but that is not his exclusive audience.
- Translated Semitic words for his audience.

- several quotations, allusion, and stories drawn from the Old Testament which presuppose the readers’ knowledge of the Old Testament.

- to this same group, John strongly denounces “the Jews”.

- the author is writing to a group with which he has sufficient similarity

There is also an emphasis on individual expression of faith

- an evangelistic purpose: Belief.

I am the True Vine, 15:1 (Ps 80:9-16; Jer 2:21)
