The Fire Academy will accept credit for courses from recognized, accredited institutions for purposes of meeting promotional and related requirements under the following conditions:

• The course is from a recognized accredited Technical College, College, University, or Fire/Emergency Services training institution.




• The course is equivalent to content and length. Five quarter credit hours and three semester credit hours will be considered equivalent to approximately 50 contact hours. Series of courses may be considered for approval to meet the requirements of single longer courses.




• A grade of “C” or better was achieved. Fire/EMS courses where letter grades were not issued may be considered provided the student successfully met the requirements of the course.




• The course is not considered a remedial course.




• The course was completed within five years of the date the request for transfer was received by the Fire Academy. Exceptions for general studies and courses with stable content may be considered for approval

The approval of course credit will be determined by the Battalion Chief of Training. To request course credit the employee must:

1. Submit the Request for Transfer Credit Form to the Fire Academy.




2. Initiate, and if needed, pay for a request of the original transcript to be sent directly to:Battalion Chief of TrainingGwinnett County Fire Academy3608 Braselton HighwayDacula, GA 30019




3. Provide a course catalog that includes the course description of the course(s) for which transfer credit is being requested, to the Battalion Chief of Training, from the institution having provided the instruction. This is not necessary if an appropriate catalog is on file at the Fire Academy.




4. If necessary, be available for an interview to determine that the requirements are met

If the employee knows they will be attending a course for which transfer credit will be desired, a __________________ should be requested.

If the employee knows they will be attending a course for which transfer credit will be desired, a Letter of Transfer Credit Approval should be requested.




This will prevent wasted resources and the possibility of a course that is not acceptable

To request a Letter of Transfer Credit Approval the employee must:

1. Submit the Request for Transfer Credit Form with the Pre-Approval option indicated to the Fire Academy. If the request is for department sponsored training or education, the form may accompany the Training/Travel Request Form (FA-308).




2. Provide a course catalog that includes a course description of the course(s) for which transfer credit is requested, to the Battalion Chief of Training, from the institution that will provide the instruction. This is not necessary if an appropriate catalog is on file at the Fire Academy.




3. After course completion, initiate, and if needed, pay for a request of the original transcript to be sent directly to:
