Is there value of religion in a secular society?

Yes:


- Religion gives a sense of community.


- It is a tradition.


- Religion proviodes morals.


- Religion provides support.




No:


- People feel that science explains everything, do not believe in God.


- Fewer people are brought up to be religious.


- Lots of different religions - what one is right?


- Religion can cause prejudice and discrimination.

How do people experience God?

- Religious experience.

How do people respond to God?

- When someone feels they have a duty to do a job.


- Choose to be priests, monks, and nuns because they feel that it is their vocation.


- People also become doctors, nurses, and teachers to help others.


- Its a way of showing love and commitment to their faith.

Protestant:


- Buried or cremated.


- Prayers, Hymns and bible readings.


- Grave or crematorium.


- Eulogy.


- Pray for family.




Catholics:


- Buried or cremated.


- At church, there is mass also.


- Hymns, bible readings and prayers.


- Pray for dead.


- Coffin sprinkles with holy water to remind of baptism.

Does God exist?

Yes:


- If he doesn't, how did the world start?


- Bible provides evidence that he exists.


- People have experienced miracles.


- Evil and suffering are tests of faith.




No:


- Science explains how the world started.


- The bible is made up stories.


- If God is good and Powel, why is there evil?


- No one has seen him, so he doesn't exist.

Jesus is...

- God's son.


- Fully God and fully human.


- Someone who sacrificed themself to allow us to go to heaven.


- Lord: someone in charge, to be obeyed and respected.


- Redeemer: someone who pays the price to set others free.

Christian symbools:

Fish: Summary of beliefs.


Crucifix: Reminder of how Jesus sacrificed himself for us.


Priest vestments: Special clothes worn at church services, each item is symbolic.


Salvation Army uniform: shows everyone that they are a member and that they are proud.

Why | How do Christians worship?

Alone:


- Deepen relationship with God.


- To thank God.


- To have quiet time to concentrate.


- May be more appropriate to not go to Church.




Together:


- Deepen relationship.


- To thank.


- To feel part of a community.


- To gain greater understanding.

Life after death.

Protestant:


- When you die, you go to heaven or hell for eternity.


- If you're good - Heaven is a place free of suffering with God.


- If you're bad - Hell is a place where you are punished.




Catholics:


- Either go to heaven, hell or purgatory.


- Saint = Heaven.


- Evil = Hell.


- Otherwise, you spend time in purgatory working off your sins, then to heaven.

Is belief in Life after death important?

Yes:


- Gives a reason to be good.


- Gives people hope and comfort when someone dies.


- It's talked about in Bible.


- The reason Jesus died is so we can go to heaven.




No:


- If you don't believe in God, why would you believe in Heaven?


- It makes people selfish.


- Stops people from focusing on problems now.


- There is no real evidence for heaven.
