direct democracy
a system of government in which citizens participate directly rather than through elected officials. This system was popular in Athens during the age of Pericles. The Athenian Assembly met several times per month and required at least 6,000 members present before deciding important issues. The Greek system of democracy would be the basis for most western democracies.
limited democracy
A system of government in which decisions are made by the people in the landholding class. The main difference between a limited and direct democracy is that those who do not own property do not have a say in the government.
