How do geographers study population?
By using maps, graphs, tables, population pyramids, and spatial perspective.
What are some important trends in world population?
some important trends are: 1) that the population in each country has increased by alot over the last 200 yrs.2) birthrates has dropped in recent years 2) death rate has dropped b/c medicine is better
OVERPOPULATION - world can't accomodate so many people
demography
the study of human populations.
population density
the number of people living in a area
- usually measured in a table or map
- if you have alot of people more dense then with less people
- usuall measured by Scuare mile or square km.
population distribution
People are spread across the world.
ex. 90% of pople are in the northern hemisphere.
- The earth is not balanced with people.
- alot of people are crowded in one location and in a location there could be barley any people.
population change
three major factors
-birthrate
-death rate
-migration
Birthrate

Death rate
total number of deaths for every 1000 people.
Migration
When people move from one country to another.
Emigrants
people who migrate
- try to live somewhere else.
Demographic transition
a model that shows how birthrates and death rates dropped in western countries as they developed economies and industries.
Why do population density vary greatly among the world's coiuntries?
b.c places have different terrains making living more difficult or easier and people settle in the easier places to live
Why is the world's population so unevenly distributed?
People tend to live in areas favorable toward settlements (warm weather, fertile lands, etc)
What kinds of factors cause migration?
pull and push factors
push factors- make people wanna move some were else.
ex. Cuba because there is a dictator
pull factors- make people want to go to that country.
ex. U. S. becuase has mountains and great amounts of water.
Where are the highest rates of natural increase?
Africa and Southwest Asia

looking at the traits.
- language
- clothing

- economics
family life
food

acculturation
when an individual or group adopts some of the traits to another culture.
Innovation
new ideas that a culture accepts.
What are the 2 conepts that helps you understand how culture changes?
innovation and diffusion
Diffusion
when an idea spreads throughout a person then is adopted my another culture.
-newspapers, internet, etc help diffussion
- mountains, deserts - create barriers
Expansion Diffusion
when a new idea spreads through society.
Relocation diffusion
When people move to new places and spread their traits to the new places

connections around the world increase and cultures become more alike.

following longtime practices and opposing many modern technologies and ideas.

(the opposite of globalization)
fundamentalism

- very conservative movement - people that don't like modern cultures and want to follow old rules
What are some statistics that population geographers and demographers use to study populations?
wait - 5-1
What are the 4 great clusters of world population?
see diagram in page 88
how do general processes such as migration, war and trade cause cultural change?
wait - p 96
hierarchical diffusion
when traits spread from a place of big importance and power to one smaller

- this is how fashion usually spreads
what are the different types of diffusion
1. expansion diffusion -idea spreads in 1 society
2.relocation diffusion - idea spreads when people move
3. hierarchical diffusion -ideas go from big to small places
globalization vs traditionalism
different ideas

globalization - willing to adopt new ideas and new ways

traditionalism - wants to keep old time traditions
What is the geography of the world languages?
the spatial characteristics.
What are the three main religions that geopgraphers identify?
Ethnic religions, animist religions, and universalizing religions.
Dialect

What is the language spoken the most?
