What is Jaundice? |
Yellow skin color, eyes, mucous membranes causes by bilirubin, a byproduct of old RBC's. Liver removes old blood cells and breaks down bilirubin. |

What is Cirrhosis? |
Scarring of the liver and poor liver function. Final phase of chronic liver disease. |

What is hepatitis? |
Most hepatitis is caused by virus, others caused by chemical, drug reaction, or alcohol. Other viruses that cause hepatitis include Epstein-Barr, herpes I & II, varicella-zoster (chicken pox), and measles.
S&S: fever, flu symptoms, abrupt fatigue, anorexia, headache, jaundice, dark urine, lighter stool, enlarged spleen & liver, and intermitten pruritus (itching).
Acute hepatitis requires medical treatment while chronic may require transplant. A,B,&C are most common. A occurs from fecal-oral route, is acute and recovers in 6-10 weeks. B occurs from blood, seme, or maternal-fetal exposure, acute with 10% becoming chronic, and requires Hep-B immunoglobulin (HBIG) within 24 hours of exposure, vaccinations at 1-6 mos. C is most common chronic liver disease and liver failure, occurs through sharing needles, intercourse, blood, semen, body fluids, or maternal-fetal exposure. Asymptomatic in acute stage, but may progress to cirrhosis in chronic cases. |
