What is Jaundice?

Yellow skin color, eyes, mucous membranes causes by bilirubin, a byproduct of old RBC's. Liver removes old blood cells and breaks down bilirubin.

What is Cirrhosis?

Scarring of the liver and poor liver function. Final phase of chronic liver disease.

What is hepatitis?

Most hepatitis is caused by virus, others caused by chemical, drug reaction, or alcohol. Other viruses that cause hepatitis include Epstein-Barr, herpes I & II, varicella-zoster (chicken pox), and measles.



S&S: fever, flu symptoms, abrupt fatigue, anorexia, headache, jaundice, dark urine, lighter stool, enlarged spleen & liver, and intermitten pruritus (itching).



Acute hepatitis requires medical treatment while chronic may require transplant. A,B,&C are most common. A occurs from fecal-oral route, is acute and recovers in 6-10 weeks. B occurs from blood, seme, or maternal-fetal exposure, acute with 10% becoming chronic, and requires Hep-B immunoglobulin (HBIG) within 24 hours of exposure, vaccinations at 1-6 mos. C is most common chronic liver disease and liver failure, occurs through sharing needles, intercourse, blood, semen, body fluids, or maternal-fetal exposure. Asymptomatic in acute stage, but may progress to cirrhosis in chronic cases.
