Gastric Analysis

Purpose
fiberoptic scope visualize esophageal, gastric, and duodenal mucosa, detects abnormalities, can collect specimens
EGD Requirements
NPO 6-12 hrs prior, local anesthetic and moderate sedation, Pt. remains NPO until gag reflex returns
ERCP ( Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) Uses
jaundice, pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, duct and tract disease, views sides, pre and post same as EGD
Barium Swallow
uses contrast to viualize upper GI tract, detects narrowing
Barium Swallow Pre and Post
NPO 8-12 hrs. , increase fluids to eliminate barium, cathartics (meds to stimulate bowel)
Hydrogem breath test
detect overgrowth of bacteria in intestine
Urea Breath

series of x-rays to detect gallstones and assess gallbladder function, not useful with jaundice

Percutatnous Transhepatic Cholangiography def.
injection of dye through skin into billiary tract, observe through series of x-rays, distinguish between billiary obstruction and jaundice caused by liver disease

NPO 6-10 hrs. ad laxative evening prior, monitor for bleeding and fever
Upper GI Series Def.
series of x-rays after ingestion of rdioisotope up to 24 hrs. evaluate gastric emptying, looks at anatomic and function of upper GI organs and sphincters
Upper GI series prep:
low residual diet for several days, NPO after midnight, no smoking AM, post: include fluids, check BM's, poss. cathartics
Barium enema def.
x-rays to visualize colon after instillation of barium, detects, polops, tumors, diverticula,& obstruction

clear liquid day prior, NPO 8-12 hrs, bowel cleansing before, cathartics after
Colonoscopy def.
flexible scope, directly visualize entire colonto ileocecal valve
Colonoscopy prep:
clear liquids 1-3 days prior, 12-24 hrs. prior give prep, NPO 6-8 hrs, oral prep given evening prior and morning of, observe for perforation
Proctosigmoidoscopy def.
rigid metal scope, visualize rectum and sigmoid colon
Proctosigmoidoscopy prep
clear liquids 1 day prior, enemas evening and morning before, knee-chest position, observe for rectal bleeding
HIDA Scan
visualizes gallbladder, common bile ducts, and duodenum after injecting radioneucleotide, r/t obstruction of GB and common bile ducts, serial images over 1- hrs.

NPO atleast 2 hrs.
