Where is the focus?
The focus is a point under the earth where the rocks break under stress and the plates collide and start a earthquake.
Where is the epicenter?
The epicenter is where the earthquake starts above the surface of the earth. The epicenter is directly beneath the focus.
What are Body Waves
P waves and S waves
What are P waves?
P waves goes through solid rock and earth forms
Reach seismic stations faster then S waves |
What are S Waves?
Only goes through solid forms
What are surface waves? (Not S-Wave)
Surface waves are Q&R Waves and travel slower then Body Waves
How to read the seismograph?
Which wave is recorded first? |
Seismograph can be read by looking at the start of one wave and the start of another wave
Measure Time EX: P wave start - S wave start = Time of the P wave P waves are first recorded on your seismograph because they are the fastest types of waves. |
The S waves will be recorded second and they are usually bigger then the P waves.
If there is no S waves that means that the earthquake occurred on a different side of the planet and since S waves can’t travel through the liquid layers of the earth they never make it to the seismograph. |
How to locate an epicenter on a map?
1. scale the map
2. Figure out how long the epicenter is on your map using the scale 3. Take a compass and draw circles using the measurements you obtained and where the 3 circles cross is where the epicenter is. |

What are the five characteristics of a mineral?
1. Solid
2. Inorganic 3. Naturally Occurring 4. Definite Chemical Composition 5. Definite Crystalline Structure |
How to test the streak of the minerals?
Streak Test
-you determine the streak by the color it leaves behind when you test it. No color = No streak |
