Why are box and whisker diagrams a useful way of representing a data set
It shows whether the data is skewed or not, it gives you a sense of the patterns within the data
What do box and whisker diagrams show
The dispersion or spread of a data set
What does the interquartile range show?
The spread of values around median value of a data set. A small interquartile range shows data is not spread out.
What does standard deviation show?
The spread of values around the mean value of a data set.
So a low standard deviation means values are around the mean. High means values are widely spread |
What does Spearman's Rank tell you?
If there is a correlation between two sets of data.
The closer it is to 0, the weaker the relationship If it is greater than or equal to 0, you accept alternative hypothesis, otherwise you accept null hypothesis |
Advantages of Spearman's Rank
Relatively quick and easy to replicate
Can see the correlation between 2 covariables Provides you with a statistical value to support the alternate or null hypothesis Can see how strongly your evidence supports a certain hypothesis 95% reliable so the calculated value is accurate and valid |
What is a log graph?
A graph with logarithmic scales on both axis. The divisions aren't equal. So on a log scale, it is in cycles of 10, and the division between lines gets smaller within each cycle
What is a semi-log scale?
When there is a logarithmic scale on the y axis only
What are Log graphs good for?
Displaing a large range of data, where rate of change is more important than actual amounts
Producing a graph that shows a clear line relationship |
What things to include when talking about a population pyramid
Comment on the shape
Talk about each age group- under 19s (youth), 19-60 (economically active), over 60 (elderly). With figures! Talk about dependency ratio Mention the largest and smallest age group Explain reasons about why each age group is like it is and implications if necessary |
How do you comment on a pattern shown on a graph?
Talk about the correlation (strong weak, positive negative)
Figures Anomalies and why |
How to talk about storm hydrographs?
Comment on lag time, peak discharge, rising limb, falling limb.
FOR rainfall and discharge |
Advantages of chloropleth map?
No training is required
Easy to understand through key Density shading allows you to see from high to low and compare |
Disadvantages of chloropleth map?
Categories and no actual figures
Implies abrupt change between areas but it's actually gradual- could be a 1mm difference No place names or labels to locate it |
How to know heights on a map?
Contour lines
Spot heights Trig points REMEMBER rivers only flow down. Try to say directions- grid references, place names, NESW |
What does the width show on a flow line?
The width is proportional to the volume
