What is a river course?

Name the three stages that may occur in the course of a river

Youthful stage, mature stage and old age stage

What are the characteristics of a youthful river?

Small in size

They usually flow down steep slopes

Such rivers erode the land over which they flow

What is hydraulic action?

The force of moving wate, which breaks fragments (load) from the bed and the banks of a river.

What is abrasion?

Is when the load hits against the bed and banks of he river and erodes them rapidly

What is attrition?

When the stones carried in the load of the river are themselves worn down. Stones are made smaller by this process

What is solution?

It's when chemicals in the water help to break down some rocks, e.g carbonic acid breaks down limestone

Features of erosion by young rivers

V shaped valleys - have steep sides and very narrow floors (pg 31)

Interlocking spurs - areas of high ground which seem to lock into each other as they stick out across a v shaped valley (pg 32)

Waterfalls - when a river falls over a vertical slope (pg 33)

Features of a mature river

Valley troughs - wide floored valleys with gently sloping sides (pg 34)

Meanders - large curves in the course of a river (pg 35)

Features of deposition

Flood plains - low flat land that borders old rivers and which are sometimes flooded by the rivers (pg 36)

Levees - narrow raised banks of alluvium found along the banks of some old rivers

Ox bow lakes - horseshoe found lakes found near old rivers (pg 37)

Deltas - triangular shaped areas of land which form at the mouth of rivers and are made up if alluvium
