Erosion

Erosion is the process of wearing away and breaking down rocks. There are three main types of coastal erosion: abrasion, attrition and hydraulic action

Hydraulic action is where the sea water fills in the gaps where the cliff has already eroded, this will increase the air pressure causing the rock to weaken and eventually collapse.

Transportation

Material travels and is deposited on the shore by long-shore drift (swash and backwash)

A spit is formed as the cliff protects it from the wind, also the power of the sea and the river in the opposite direction cancels out

Deposition

Materials of dropped off to the spit

Coastal Management

Hard engineering = solid structure which resists the force of erosion. This can be ugly/expensive

Soft engineering = more environmentally friendly: social, environmental and economical. This can look natural.

Holistics = everybody has their point of view before making a decision.

Coastal Conflict

Residents, Tourists, Conservation, Government, Local Authorities and Coastal Protection Agencies

Christchurch and North Norfolk Coastline

Beach replenishment, groynes and sea walls were the main three things they did to manage the coast

Largest town is being protected

Weathering

Physical - it freezes, the rocks become weak and pressured.

Chemical - acid rain and limestone react which dissolves the rocks

Biological - weaken of the rocks

Sub-aerial - Weathering
