Religion
A system of formal (written or codified)or informal (oral tradition passed fr. gen to gen) beliefs and practices relating to the sacred and the divine.
Polytheistic religions
Many gods, the majority of religions are poly. but have a very small geog distribution, often coincide w/ tribal or ethnic boundaries
Monotheistic religions
One god, appeared later around 1500bce, only 3 exist (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) 1/3 of ppl in world r either christian or muslim, these religions dont coincide w/ geog boundaries but rather overlap them.
Ethnic Religions
Membership is either by birth or by adopting a certain complex ethnic lifestyle, which includes a certain religious belief sys. It's a rel. belief sys. of a specific ethnic or tribal group and is unique to that group.
Universalizing Religions
membership is open to anyone who chooses to make a solemn commitment to that religion regardless of class or ethnicity. Cross political and state boundaries.
Secularism
Indeifference to or rejection of a certain belief sys. or religious beliefs in general.
