Which lake is this?

Lake Michigan

Define weather

Short term atmosphere conditions, (day to day)

Define climate

Long term (average) atmosphere conditions

What causes precipitation?

•air cools as it rises

•moisture from cold air falls as rain/snow/etc.

What are the 2 main parts of climate?

Temperature and precipitation

List the 5 main climate controls

•latitude

•elevation

•continental/maritime climates

•ocean currents

•mountain barriers

What is the rule about latitude and climate?

Far north/south its cold, near the equator its hot

Which climate control is the most powerful?

Latitude

Show a diagram of how latitude affects climate

What is the rule of elevation and climate?

It gets colder as your elevation increases

Show a diagram of elevation and climate

What happens as your elevation increases?

The air expands and cools, creating colder and thinner air (less particles to heat up)

What is the relation between continental/maritime climates and climate?

Bodies of water help regulate temperature (maritime)

Less water= more extreme weather

How does water regulate temperature?

Water cools/heats slower than land, so water helps regulate temperature

What is the relation between ocean currents and climate?

Warm currents= more precipitation

Cold currents= less precipitation

Why do warm ocean currents cause more precipitation?

Warm water evaporates more, so there is more moisture in the air

What is the relation between mountain barriers and climate?

Mountain barriers create relief (orographic) precipitation

Why do mountain barriers cause relief precipitation?

As air rises up the mountain, it expands and cools, and more water droplets gather. They fall as rain/snow/hail

Show a diagram of relief precipitation
