Suburbanisation

The movement of people, employment and facilities away from the inner city towards outer urban areas made possible by increased transport options.


A result of this is the creation of edge cities ( multi-functional urban cores) which are self-sufficient urban entities. e.g Bondi, Chatswood

Exurbanisation

a process where-by people move from city to rural areas but continue to live an urban way of life through long commute or technology.


e.g Paterson, Hinton

Counterurbanisation

a reversal of the rural- large city movement associated with urbanisation.


In the case of Sydney, some leave for employment or lifestyle related reasons. The influx of people, however nowadays still beats the amount leaving.

Decentralisation

the dispersal of activities and people from large urban centres to smaller urban centres and rural communities.


In Australia, decentralisation became and official government policy. Incentives were give to companies willing to relocate to smaller often regional centres.

Urban Consolidation

policies that encourage higher population densities in established suburban areas, usually through planning regulations allowing more units on a given area of land. It is a way of slowing urban sprawl + making use of infrastructure. It can be seen around Sydney particular in areas around railways and desirable neighbourhoods

Urban Decay

the deterioration of the built up environment. Urban infrastructure falls into a state of disrepair and buildings are left empty for a long period of time.


Until the mid 1960's Sydney's inner- city experienced urban decay

Urban Renewal
the redevelopment of an urban area.
Urban Village

distinctive residential districts comprising a clustering of people with a common culture and forming an identifiable community.

Mossman- social precinct for high socioeconomic status groups


Leichardt- a focus of local café society with Italian prescence

Spatial exclusion

the protection of luxury lifestyles which has resulted in restrictions in spatial access and the freedom of movement of other urban dwellers.


e.g. high security suburbs, walled estates


canal estates, gold coast, one way in one way out

Exclusionary Zoning
land use regulations or controls that are designed to exclude 'undesirable elements' from a particular urban space.
Gentrification
the renewal of inner-city residential precincts.

the area bounded by the furthest extent of commuting to metropolitan jobs.
