A series of linked elements affecting the coastal zone through which energy and material circulate

Open system

Allows the transfer of matter and energy

Closed system

Only energy can be transferred

Inputs

Something that is added to a system

Dynamic equilibrium

When there is balance between the inputs and outputs

Backshore

Between HWM and landward limit for marine activity. Changes normally in storm

Negative feedback

Where the effects of an action are nullified by subsequent knock on effects

Positive feedback

Where the effects of an action are amplified or multiplied by subsequent knock on effects

Foreshore

The area between HWM and LWM. Most important zone for marine processes, not influenced by storm

Inshore

Area between LWM and point where waves have no influence over land below

Offshore

Area beyond the point where waves cease to impact on the seabed and activity is limited to deposition of sediment

Nearshore

Area extending seaward from the HWM where waves begin to break

Swash zone

The area where a turbulent layer of water wahses up the beach following a wave breaking

Surf zone

The area between the point where waves break, forming a foamy surface and where waves move up beach as swash in swashzone

Breaker zone

The area where waves approaching coastline begin to break (5-10m)
